DO A MAP RECCE.
Use Google Maps to zoom in on an intended fishing site to gauge the water conditions, current, substructure and structure before you even wet a line. Research is always good and the birds eye veiw of a spot you've never tried Surfcasting or Rock Fishing or an old one can disclose its secrets.Google maps will even give you directions on how to get there.and its free.
.
This makes sure that the bait is presented in such a way that it looks as though it was been uncovered by the wave action.Do Not cast directly into the hole as fish dont like sand in their gills and stay a respectable distance, and sand may cover your bait and sinker causing gear loss.

Here is an Idea I had for burleying up in river mouths and rocks. The biggest problem that Ive found
when im fishing in a burley stream is remembering where the current is taking it,so ive invented the
Flow Indicator . Basicaly it is the usual set up but with a self deploying float with a visible flag on it to show me where I should be casting into.
The lead weight holds it on the bottom .The bottle holds the bulrley and has weights in it to hold it on the bottom.
A floating string container holds the float during deployment and a loose elastic band releases it .
It then floats to the surface indicating where the burley stream is to your fishing party.

The design works well enough and I am currently working on a plan to get it out into the surf accuratley to burley holes and gutters.
Several ideas have shown them selves to be feasible.
A kite but the release mecanisim has to be reliable, too many strings, and you need an off shore wind to get it out there.
The other idea isa mortar . This appeals more to me .A modified spud bazzoka will get it out far enough but the whole set up will have to be made into one projectile with a safe main string spool that wont catch and send it back my way. The other problem will be propellent, propellent saftey, charge size, obutration rear and forward, so I will a fair bit to work out but if it can be done it will improve my fishing no end it doesnt have to go out further then 200m so it is posible. Use common sense if researching and constructing one for yourself (rage fishing accepts no responsibilty for YOUR actions)
And I will let you know how it goes.
Not only does this signifiy quality to some extent, it also makes your current gear more flexible, to help you adapt to change in tactics or conditions:you can have two breaking strengths spooled, one for Rock fishing one for Surfcasting, I have 20pd Nylon and 12pd braid each with a SHOCK TRACE of 50-80pd.Tapered shock leaders are available from fishing tackle shops. These go from around 80lbs - 18lbs and provide a smaller knot at the main line joint reducing friction in the eyes during casting.
LABLE SPOOLS WITH BREAKING STRAINS USING A MARKER PEN:
Who can remember what line you put on 6 months from now?

A shock trace is a larger diameter line tied to a smaller diameter line to enable you use lighter line to cast further; and be Physically able to put more effort into a cast without fear of gear loss."The longest cast you'll ever make will have no line attached."
A tapered Shock Trace can be purchased at Tackle Shops,These reduce the diameter of the line down to something close to the diameter of most main lines giving it a smaller knot to get caught on the eyes during the cast these can be a Bit Pricey
Example : 1 and Half times the rod length of 80Lb line
tied to the main line. The shock is absorbed by the 70Lb-50lb line and the Thinner line (main line) Follows.
These ones are cheeper then most and are in NZ (Foxton) Tackle Tactics

keep barbs and point clear. Too much can make you miss an otherwise successfull hook up
Always test a lure for action where you can watch it and judge its retreive speed for best seductive action. Ive caught 2 brown trout spinning, doing this right at my feet in the Manawatu river.

Make sure you do this.Very over looked by many of us but if you just spent $200 on a decent reel you want it to last the year.

Use just above your sinker for a burley stream that floats right to and past your bait and hook.

repels insects AND fish.

Take a 40mm-70mm plastic tube,a peice of down pipe cut off is ideal. Cut to 1m or to a personal, practical length, cut a 45degree angle to push into sand, you just saved yourself $20-$40.00 taaadaaa... you are a genius!!

Just Don't Spray your swivels as the attractant or oil may get claggy over time and ruin the swivels ability to remove line twist
